Francis Birtles and Alec Barlow sped out of Darwin in this Bean vehicle
early on the morning of 22 October 1926. Stopping only to refuel and to snatch
a few minutes sleep they raced south along rough outback tracks.
Eight days and 13 hours later they reached the Elizabeth Street post office
in Melbourne.
They had set a new record for crossing Australia in a motor vehicle.
